Letter 11.

Head Quarters Sub-District of Ala
office Superintendent of Education
Montgomery Ala Dec 14th 1866.

Alovrd Rev J.W.
Insped &c
Washington, D.C.

Dear Sir,

I have the honor to request ten (10) Sets Vouchers form No 17. for the payment of teachers transportation fares.

I beg leave to ask also if the cost of transportation can be refunded, on necessary certification to teachers commissioned and brought into the State by the State Superintendent of Education

Our demand for teachers has heretofore greatly exceeded the ability of Benevolent Societies to supply our wants. Hence a few competent and experienced teachers have been brought from the North whose Salaries have been paid by the Bureau. as you will see from the annual reported of the Assistant Commissioner. I have given such teachers encouragement to think as their Salaries are small that the cost of transportation would be refunded.

I respectfully ask information on this point at your earliest convenience.

Very Respectfully
Your Obdt Servant

Letter 12

Office Superintendent Education.
Montgomery Ala. Dec 14th 1866

Mutch George Eqr
Opelika Ala.

Dear Sir:

Enclosed please find receipt of Southern Express Company for one hundred and thirteen dollars and seventy five cents, forwarded to your address, this day, less exchange on Mobile at 1/4 of one percent; the same being the amount of your salary and that of your wife for the month of November 1866.

Our payments are now made with drafts on United State Depository Mobile Ala. Thinking that I could get the draft cashed at the Banks in this city at better rates than you can in Opelika, I have taken the liberty to send money instead of the draft. If, however, you would prefer, in future, the draft sent you, please advise me before the next payment. It would be less trouble for me to send the draft, but it might not be for your interest.-

Return usual receipt

Very respectfully
Your obedient servant
C.W. Buckley
