Marion Ala Feby 18th 1867 8(?)

Maj Genl Wager Swayne
Montgomery

Dear Sir
I have had a conference with Mr F.C. Steward who has charge of the school for colored persons of Marion in regard to the necessity, and policy of building a house for the use of the school. I have no hesitation in giving it as my opinion that there is an absolute necessity for such a building, and that policy requires that it be built if the means can be furnished.
There are 199 scholars in the school as I am informed by Mr Steward, and no doubt the number would increase to 200 or 300 if there was a building large enough to accommodate them. No house can be rented of sufficient dimensions to afford the necessary sum for this larger and increasing school. Our people are unable to build a house, but I am authorized to say that a suitable lot will be provided for the purpose.
Our white citizens are anxious to see the colored children educated and are desirous that a suitable building be erected to accommodate them. I hope it is in your power to furnish the means for that purpose. Mr Steward will furnish you with a plan and the probable cost of a suitable building.
Very Respy
Your obdt servant
