I would state further that at the last meeting of the Legislature of Alabama a bill was passed, setting apart from the revenue of the State, the sum of $245,411.46. to be applied to the support of free public schools in the State during the present year commencing Oct. 1, 1868. In addition to this there is a poll-tax of $1.50 which will probably yield a revenue of $160,000, making the income of the State this year for Common Schools, in round numbers, about $400,000. In addition to this there is an indebtedness of the State, to the School Fund, maturing on the first of Dec. next, of $198,186.83. It is not probable, however, that the state will be able to meet this claim in the Embarrassed condition of its finances.
This is all the information in my possession at present. Alabama has made ample provision for free public schools. If wisely managed it will tell upon her future. Very little has yet been done. It will require time to put things in motion.
Yours truly
R. D. Harper
Supt of Education
