At Demopolis a colored school is taught [[strikethrough]] by [[/strikethrough]] in a building formerly used as a hospital The building is very suitable for school purposes. It is situated on the grounds of the Freeds [[Seminary?]] and ought to be for many reasons removed to other grounds. In company with Maj Pierce a very convenient location was selected, which the owner will lease for a term of [[?]]. I respectfully ask that enough of funds now in the hands of Maj Pierce be appropriated for the purpose of removing this hospital building to its new site and convert it to a school building. One hundred and fifty dollars are sufficient for this purpose.

In the brick building at Gainesville formerly used as an Arsenal by the Confederate Gov is a large school taught by a colored man. This is a splendid building [[strikethrough]] for [[/strikethrough]] with good school room. It is located in the suburbs of the town and situated on R.R ground, which can be [[strikethrough]] hired [[/strikethrough]] rented [[strikethrough]] for in indef [[/strikethrough]] of the company. Two teachers, a gentleman and his wife, are now on their way to this point, to organize and build up a large school at this point.

I found several persons in this place were in favor of colored schools. I visited a large Sabbath School in the Presb Church in which the pupils are taught to read. The children carried the testament in one hand and Webster Speller in the other. The colored people seemed to enjoy unusual freedom in many respects.

Transcription Notes:
Is the hospital the Freedmen's hospital mentioned on the next page, which has a building at the rear of the hospital? So where it says "It is situated on the grounds of the Freeds [[Freedmen's]] [[?]] and ought to be removed..." It looks like the word is "Secretary", but that doesn't make sense. It isn't "hospital", or "Asylum", but maybe it says Freeds Seminary?
