Sub Dist of Eufaula
C P Wheeler, Mrs E J Wheeler, H Dowdell Thos Harvey, Vinson.

Making in all Eighty three teachers; It is probable that if correct returns were made from all the Sub Districts, the number would be increased

These teachers as far as known to us are actively and efficiently engaged in the work. They deserve the sympathy & encouragement of all the friends of education & humanity. The amount of self denial and suffering which they are heroicly enduring deserves a better record than they are likely to receive. Destitute of all the comforts of home life, ostracized by the people of the South, cut off from all social life, despised and persecuted & their very lives in danger. They are standing upon nobly & fearlessly at their posts and hope only to receive their due reward from Him who has given the great and world wide commission, "Go ye therefore and teach all nations."

Opposition to the Work
I desire to call your attention especially to this point It is difficult, — indeed it is impossible for anyone at a distance to form any correct conception of the State of public sentiment throughout the state, toward all efforts for the elevation of the colored race, and towards those who are engaged in this laudable work. Sub. Asst Comrs & Agents almost without exception report determined hostility towards the education of the freedmen.
