giving up of their prejudices to Southern teachers, on the part of the Citizens; a surrendering of opposition to Colored Schools, foreshadows a far different and better state of things for the year to come.

Effort has been made to supply the moral and religious wants of the freedmen as far as possible. A donation of two thousand Bibles and Testaments has been received from the Board of managers of the American Bible Society. As pupils learn to read, a Testament or Bible is given them, and in this way portions of the Holy Scriptures find their way to households which, probably, would be reached in no other way. Their are numbers of flourishing Sabbath Schools in the State of which no mention has been made in this report. Many of these are conducted wholly by freedmen; some by citizens; some are under the superintendency of  Northern teachers. As this subject is of vital importance, measures are being taken to organize a State Sunday School Teachers Association. The Sunday Schools of this city have been supplied with two valuable labraries through the agency of Captain M.C. Wilkinson of Elmira New York. A handsome
