of regret that the former gentleman is about to change his residence from Tuskegee to North Carolina: and this at a moment when his firm, straight forward course in behalf of right and justice to all is gaining for himself the friendship of former political enemies and widening his sphere of usefulness. His loss to Tuskegee is but partially atoned for by his own words, that the state of his adoption is a good place in which to do duty.

Auburn
From Tuskegee I proceeded to Auburn where we have a school under the charge of Rev. J.H. Whitby, assisted by his son. Here I found a state of things similar to the Tuskegee school; but worse from the fact that with a lack of system Mr. Whitby combines a lamentable deficiency in energy of character. His disorderly school, and all the appointments of the school room convinced one that he has but little interest in his work. I remained in his school long enough to bring it to order, hear many of his recitations, and dismiss his son
