Salem
On my return from Columbus, I stopped at Salem, where Mr. Pruitt is teaching. his school has been opened since June last. He has had a much opposition to contend with, and his school is the smallest of any one visited. Yet considerable progress has been made towards establishing a permanent school. The colored people of the town have bought a building - twenty-four by thirty-six feet. Mr. Pruitt has donated a lot on which to move this building. The lot adjoins the town, is pleasantly located, and convenient to water. It is to be used exclusively by the colored people so long as they keep up a school on the premises. He seems interested in his work, and wholly committed to the elevation of the colored race.

At all the places above mention, the teachers are southern persons. They are lacking in systems, and are unacquainted
