Endorsement on letter of R.D. Harper to Maj. James Gillette

Sub. Dist Mobile Bureau R. & F.
Mobile, Ala. June 26th 1868
Respectfully returned to Rev. R.D. Harper Supt. of Education. It would be well to furnish this office with copies of any papers on the subject. The owner is reported to be in St. Louis where he has expressed his intention to remain until the supposed five years lease expires. The neighbors all say that the Government is responsible for the building & this seems to be the only idea prevalent about the matter. No authorized Agent can be found in Mobile. A congregation of colored people are worshiping in the building - the pastor & trustee having the understanding that the government pays the rent. I have notified them that we do not possess any authority over the building & have not since last year.
A notice should be published to this effect & the owner notified.
