Some copies of "the Freedmen", very kindly given me by Capt. Bush, were criticised and used against me. With these unfavorable circumstances and others, and the improbability of finding any friendly family in which to board, I was about to abandon the idea of returning to Hayneville, though with great regret, as I had a very promising school, and many friends among the colored people, many of whom begged me with tears in their eyes, to return.
