Mrs Jane Merriwether of the town of Springfield County and State aforesaid being duly sworn Says. That she was employed to teach a colored School of Springfield in this county, (a small village 3 1/2 miles north of Eutaw) by Rev J.B.F. Hill of Eutaw that Mr Hill showed her a letter from Rev Mr Buckley authorizing him to establish colored schools in this county and employing teachers to be paid by the government. She opened the school on the first day of April and taught during April, May, and 13 days in June when she abandoned the School for want of means to buy the nessessaries of life. her School averaged 45 Scholars. She never received or signed vouchers for pay for any part of the time she taught, and the she never received any pay whatever
