Rev R. D. Harper
Dear Sir: I have been informed by Rev E. J. Hamil that you are the successor of Rev Mr Buckley as Supt. of Education. I was employed by Mr Buckley as a teacher of The Freedman's School at this place, & taught from 20th of June 1866 to 1st of August 1867. I was to receive for my services $75.00 per month for the first eight months, and it was then reduced to $50.00. I was also to receive $10.00 per month for house rent, but being unable to procure a house else where, I agreed to furnish a house myself in my own yard for $5 00 per month
I was also compelled to furnish the house with fire-wood, it took two loads per week during the winter, which was worth a dollar per load
I received as tuition pay for all the time I taught except the month July 1867. I rece'd only two month's rent for my house, I think there is due me now, one month's tuition and eleven months house rent, Amount in all to $100.00
I hope you will give this matter a full and fair investigation and award me what justice requires. I want nothing but what is right
I enclose a certificate of Rev E. J. Hamil whose character you can learn from Col. R. T. Smith of the Freedmen's Bureau at Opelika
