Sub Dist of Opelika
Bureau R.F. & A.L.
Opelika Ala Nov. 23rd 1868,

Mr. R.D. Harper
Supt. of Education,
Montgomery Ala,

Sir,
I have the honor to respectfully ask you to furnish me with two hundred School Books (assorted) for Freedmen to be distributed in this Sub. District. There has been several free Schools opened within the past two weeks, and I am receiving numerous applications for books every day. Assistance in this way is very much needed as there are some Freedmen who are unable to furnish their own books and consequently can not attend School. The books which you furnished Lieut. Kingsbury were mostly distributed in, and immediately around Opelika, and in localities where books were most needed they did not receive any at all.

Very Respectfully
Your Obt Servt
D.B. Smith
Sub Asst. Commissioner
