General
At the request of George Hawkins a worthy and intelligent Freedman, I write to ask your attention to his case, and to solicit relief.

In May 1866 George was apprenticed by the C.W. Buck by Suprdt. of Education for Alabama as a Teacher under the auspices and patronage of the Bureau. From May till November of that year, he successfully conducted a school with an average attendance of Thirty Four by accurate computation. For no part of this time has George received any compensation whatever although he has repeatedly been promised it by Mr. Buckley. George requests, General, that you will be kind enough to give him some suggestion as to the mode he shall adopt to secure remuneration for the services he rendered the Bureau by appointment of Mr Buckley

I am General
Yours Most Respectfully
