Mr. Buckley
Dr. Sir:

In behalf of a society of freedmen under the charge of Elder James Wadsworth, of the African Methodist Episcopal Zion Church, in this city, I ask a moment of your attention. Although a religious society they are very much interested in educating their children, and freely allow the building they worship in for schools. This building, formerly a [[strikethrough]] school [[/strikethrough]] dwelling house, needs repairs, and Uncle James humbly asks the modest sum of one hundred and fifty dollars to get on a good footing, when he thinks he will be able to maintain his equilibrium. From any personal knowledge of Elder James, I feel assured that the money, under our supervision, will be well appropriated, and though indirectly benefitting the religious society with which he is connected will also be of great and much needed service to the course of education.
Very Respectfully
Your obd. Servant
