I was quite amused at the history of one of these - of which old "Aunt Susan" was the recipient. She is too old and infirm to get out to school - and one Sat. afternoon I took my bible and a 'Freedman' and went to read them to her - Sitting in front of her cabin as we did, called one or two others around us - and as I left there was no little discussion about her lending her paper.

At length she yielded - and the result she gave me [[strikethrough]] the result [[/strikethrough]] this week.

From one to another it had passed until it came to "Sam" and it "had been toted till it was so black he had got to keep it and give her another one" -

Just here. Mr. Adams has come from Capt. Gardner's office - and tells me - he has some papers for which many thanks
