Dear Sir:
I have the honor to ask transportation for William L. Carter, a destitute colored boy from Mobile Ala to Oberlin Ohio. He goes forth seeking a liberal education, with a view of becoming a teacher of freedmen.

If possible, I hope the request will be granted.

Very respectfully
Your obedient servant
