Dear Sir:
In reply to your favor of the 28th ultimo, I have the honor to say that we levy and collect, by state law, an annual tax of two mills on the dollar, ad valorem, for the support of our common schools. The total State tax this year is seven and seven-tenths (7.7) mills on the dollar, so that our school tax is about one fourth of the whole State tax, and the proportion has always been about the same.

You will find a succinct account of all our school funds, in the documents forwarded herewith.

Very Respectfully
Your Obedient Servant.
Newton Bateman
Supt. Pub. Inst. Ill.
