Dear sir I have been thinking for some time I would write to you and ask aid in behalf of the Freedman of our village
The first I would ask for funds to Build them a school House. Say 24 by 30 feet; and funds to pay for a suitable teacher. our Freedman have a Large church built by their former owners. and they hold their own sermons and night meetings as they may dictate for them selves under their own colour for Pastor. They have a large membership here. I would say not Less than 200 members in the Babtist and Methodist Churches, at a Quarterly meeting held monthly the M.E. Church donated to the Freedmen a Handsome Lot in our village for Educational purposes. Under the Present order of things there is no way to improve the race but to educate them. But little hope for the Old and Middle aged. The young ones should be looked after. I have met you at the Spring at Montgomery but have no said you have any [[?]] of me. I refer you to Ex. Gov Watts Hon David Clopton R. A Johnston & A. B. Watt of your city. Let me hear from you
Yours truly
J. T. Crawford
