They have about $400.00, or perhaps $500.00 on their subscription; but they very much fear that they will not [[strikethrough]] not [[/strikethrough]] be able to meet the payments, and secure the lot. They, therefore, desire to know if you can afford them any aid, and how much.
The citizens, both white & colored, of Abbeville, Henry County, and of Newton, Dale County, also, desire to know if you can aid them in securing the service of a teacher for the colored children of each of those places. They can furnish a house, but cannot pay enough to engage a competent teacher.
As I have not yet obtained Agents in those counties, you may address the Probate Judges of each county, who will give the the subject prompt attention.
I am happy to state that in many parts of my sub. District, the whites are manifesting considerable interest in the education of the colored people.
Hoping you may be able to aid these people some in this good cause.
