justice between the races - early in the year 1865- I [[strikethrough]] paid [[/strikethrough]] imposed on one Bolton for assaulting and beating a freed woman a fine and costs amounting to $25- I also compelled one Drummond to pay Joe Givhan a freedman $18 for killing his hog - compelled about the same time B.F. [[Blau?]] to pay Charles Marast for his fodder & the cases of like character which came before me was adjudicated with satisfaction to the parties - there was great dissatisfaction among some classes of whites at my course & was abused from "Dan to Bershuba" for it- I however had the moral courage to do wright in the premises-

I have also been of great service to these people in council & advice, in adjusting many of their grievances, in arrangeing & diciding who should be the proper custodian of their children - settling family
