Calhoun Lownds County Ala. 9 O' clock P.M. April 30th 1867 Capt Buckley. Supt. of Education Montgomery Ala, Sir. [[stamp]] The National Archives of the United States [[/stamp]] Inclosed I send you my report of a Freedman's School taught at this place for the month of April 1867. Out of 40 pupils, I found 38 who did not know their letters. My first business was to organise and discipline, without government and much discretion no teacher can be successful. I have 2 reading in a first reader 28 reading spelling lessons and spelling easy lessons, the remaining 10 are just stepping out of their a.b.c. and inquiring for "More light." I have organized a fine Sabbath School of 88 pupils, with 3 Male and 2 female teachers, Making a total of 93 colored persons,
