Sir,
This will inform you that I am still at work, teaching the young colored ideas how to shoot. I thought best to continue my school during the remaining portion of the vacation season in order to maintain the ground already gained in a political point. Nearly all the schools are suspended, and many who calculate to control the freedmen's vote are rejoicing, and would have them believe that the Government will do nothing more for them. By continuing my school I will counteract and give these falsehoods the lie, and hold up the beacon light of hope to the freedmen. I have said nothing to them about pay as I thought it impolitic to do so, but I trust I may merit a proper consideration for services rendered. The health of my school is good, and its numbers are increasing, and doing finely. I have organized two Arithmetic Classes. I want 18 copies of the "Freedman's Second Reader." I have just given it a thorough examination, and it fills the bill to a T. It will be more acceptable to the freedmen than any other book. Can you send me some by Express?
