Talladega Ala. July 24 1867

Rev. C. W. Buckley
Sup't of Education
Montgomery Ala.

Sir While traveling through Cherokee, Bane and Calhoun counties in the month of May at different places I promised the colored people that, if they should build schoolhouses, the Bureau would send them books and a competent teacher as soon as the weather would permit this fall. I have been informed by letter that some houses are under way and they expect me to make my promise good Will you sustain me in the promise I have made? What is the prospect of the Bureau employing teachers the coming winter. Several worthy persons in the north have applied to me for advise and expressed a desire to come south and tech, please say what encouragement I may give them. I can profitably employ several additional teachers in my Sub District. I have directed my brother to offer the colored people in the vicinity of my plantation the land and one half of the timber gratis, if they would build a good log school
