Howard, Com Freedmen, &c Washington: Dear Sir: I write at the request of a number of worthy freedmen in this vicinity: And by way of preface, that you may know who I am, I will state that, though I never had the pleasure of meeting you personally, I was conducting the "Daily Progress" newspaper when you were at Raleigh, No Ca. with your Army, and that I am considered by the rebels a loyal man. I withdrew from the "Progress" in May 1866 because of want of patronage to an unconditional loyal paper in that locality at that time - and have been since that period farming here. The freedmen here who can send about 50 children, want
