& subject to the control of the Episcopal Church here, & would do more for the educational improvement of the negro, than has been done since his emancipation. The negro will inevitably sink beneath the nether millstone of the white race to a lower civilization than he had attained in his slavery, unless something be done to encourage & foster assimilation. It must be done through the free operations of Christian love. I have written to you, that you may think of this matter which with me, has for sometime been the subject of much thought. I am deeply impressed with its importance to the unhappy race of people we have amongst us, & whole destinies, you in no small degree, control. At present I only solicit of the Bureau aid sufficient to make an addition to our Church for the exclusive use of the colored portion of the Congregation. The Charity School & Church Home, I am certain, would soon follow, as almost necessary consequences.

Should you upon reflection be disposed to give
