masters for the substantial improvement & protection of the Freedmen. The Bureau can accomplish nothing permanent without the cooperation of these; and this cooperation can be obtained heartily & zealously if you set to work in the right way.

In the interview, which I had the honor to have with you last week in Montgomery, you remarked, that if you gave aid in this way to one church, you ought to give to other churches, who might make a similar application. I think so too — and you ought to give thanks to God for every additional one that is made!

The negro will indeed be safe, when every Branch of the Church is extending for him, and engaged in a laudable emulate to exalt him! You may well congratulate your policy — for there will be no need of any other Bureau for him, than the church of God!

But if you should feel unable to help all the Churches which might apply to you, you might with great propriety say to them, "I can not help all — I helped that Church with such means as I had, which took the lead in
