to be kept well posted in regard to the movements and progress of the republican party of Alabama.

I have announced myself to the whites as a radical republican, have had endless discussions on dead issues, but have gained their respect - and secured their cooperation, thus far, by opposing confiscation and favoring the repeal of the disfranchising clause, after the state is heartily reconstructed; at the same time telling them I did not know what might happen, if they failed to reconstruct precisely as Congress directs.

Monday evening: I opened school to day with seventy and a large number wish to come who did not come in to day. I am afraid I shall not be able to give as much time to each class as will be necessary.

I have sold all the books you gave me at -15 cts apiece mostly on credit (they will pay as soon as possible). I did not know what the price ought to be. I want three dozen more of the "Union Primer" and half a dozen Readers, (No. one); please inform me how to sell them. When you send my salary, retain $5.40, three dozen Primers, sold at fifteen cts apeice.

I have engaged June 1st a building temporarily of Judge C.G. Richards, at eight dollars per month; a miserably wretched affair for a school house, but plenty large. The com. to solicit money for purchase of "Old Acad" had eighty eight dollars two days ago, I think they can raise the $200, but it will be of no use unless we can get it repaired.

Amanda Mood, an undoubted union woman, wants eight first Readers to start a school in Louina, Randolph Co. Ala; she will send pay for them as soon as she can. Yours of May 31st is received; I am sorry if no more can be done for this place; but I will make the best of existing circumstances.

Very Respectfully Elliott Whipple
