Dear Sir: Yours of 14th is received. I must still request to be relieved from my duties here, as I have positively accepted an appointment as Prin. of Academic Dept of Wheaten Coll. Ill. The term begins Aug. 29th, so that I was obliged to accept or decline at once without waiting for a reply from you, and I must leave here next Tues. or Thursday at the farthest, so I wish an answer from you as soon as possible. I had not much expectation of this offer until a week ago today. I should have been very unwilling to go away, had I not supposed that the school could be carried on by Judge Harper successfully, please inform me whether or not he can have my place.
He has already incurred the admin of a certain class by becoming President of our Temp. Society; and has been carrying on a very successful revival among the colored people; he proposes to preach
