Honorable Sir
I write you for the purpose of gaining information relating to rents for School house used by freedmen I have been Teaching four months at this date & have not received anything to pay rent with I applyed to our County Superintendent But he seemed to be as ignorant as myself I then wrote to the Bu. at Demopolis several different times but failed in getting replies I saw Judge P.E. O'Connor of Demopolis a few days since he advised me to write to you also stated you was a true friend to the soldier who had braved the dangers of the many battles which were fought during the recent war in the union or federal Army I being one of them I hesiatate no longer in writing to you with of all confidence of geting repied to I do realy think that I should be favored by our government before any other Teacher I know of in this County at this date as they have never done anything for the government that it should give them any favors while I serve four years in its defence & have been threatened by mob violents & the Ku Kluck Klan to be driven from the County for Teaching a negro School but I am here yet now some of my opposers are doing the very same thing they condemned me for
