JAY CLAYTON & COMPANY LIGHT UP CABLE TV

The second in SoHo TV's new series of Monday night programs is JAY CLAYTON SINGS, featuring a star rising from the underground of the new music, and especially of the new jazz. (The program is set for December 11 at 8 pm on Manhattan Cable Channel 10, and at 8 pm on Teleprompter Channel 10.) DOWNBEAT has praised Clayton's "faultless intonation," THE NEW YORK TIMES, her "imaginative vocal invention," and the SOHO WEEKLY NEWS has simply called her "one of the most astonishing singer in New York today." She appears regularly with such renowned proponents of the new music as Steve Reich and Kirk Nurock, and was featured in the Universal Jazz Coalition's SALUTE TO WOMEN IN JAZZ this year, along with such singers as Sheila Jordan, Jeanne Lee and Maxine Sullivan.

The first hald [half]] of the program also features KIRK NUROCK, who collaborates with Clayton on two compositions. Nurock is a recognized composer, conductor and pianist in both jazz and classical musical forms, who has worked on several Broadway musicals. He has given concerts throughout the country, and can be heard on Columbia and ABC Paramount records, among others. In the second part, Clayton performs with the Janry Ensemble in an expended collaborative improvisation. The Jankry is a group with whom she appears in clubs, jazz lofts, and in such showcases as the Museum of Modern Art's distinguished SUMMERGARDEN series of contemporary music. The Ensemble includes Larry Karush on piano, Bill Conway on bass, Frank Clayton on drums, and Mark Whitecage on saxophone.

The program was produced and directed by Ingrid Wiegand. SoHo Television is a project of the Artists Television Network, which is partially supported by the National Endowment for the Arts. Partial funding for this program was also provided by Meet the Composer.

Screening are available upon request.
