SOHO TELEVISIONS YEAR-END/YEAR-IN PROGRAM CELEBRATION

Soho Television completes 1978 with "City Archives" by RICHARD FOREMAN and "Artists Propaganda/Paris" by JEAN DUPUY. On Monday, December 18th at 8 PM on Channel 10, Manhattan Cable and Teleprompter Cable Television subscribers will have the opportunity to view a compelling and provocative demonstration of Richard Foreman's made-for-televison theater work.
Nothing is left to chance as his carefully orchestrated image sequences evolve. The viewer is drawn into the array, involved in the trinary juxtaposition of object, human, camera. Then, just when the senses reach perfect visual pitch, a raucous sound is interjected, or a face is slapped, or some other disturbance jolts the viewer from the safe harmonies of the carefully wrought imagery. It is this achievement, the balancing of content and camera (eye) as well as the unexpected refrains that make "City Archives" a not-to-be-missed production.
The following Monday, Christmas, we present with glad tidings "Artists Propoganda/Paris" by Jean Dupuy. Commissioned by the George Pompidou Center in Paris, the program is composed of 19 short works by French artists and features among others Robert Filliou, Christian Boltanski, Andre Cadere, Raymond Harris and Ben. The pieces range in length from a few seconds to several minutes and explore performance art in a variety of innovative ways.
The new year begins with a three part symposium, "Time and Space Concepts on Music and Visual Art" produced by JERRY HERMAN and MARILYN BELFORD. Panelists include composer John Cage, writer/artist
Richard Kostelanetz, dancer/choreographer Merce Cunningham, and video artist Nam June Paik, with art critic Dare Ashton serving as moderator. This free-wheeling symposium, taped before a live audience, ranges from individual reminiscences, to discussions of current concerns in the artistic community in music literature, theatre, art, dance, video and technology. Part I, January 1st, features Richard Kostelanetz and John Cage; Part II, January 8th, Merce Cunningham and Nam June Paik; and Part III, January 15th, features audience questions to the participants.
SoHo Television is a project of the Artists Television Network. The series is cablecast by Manhattan Cable Television and Teleprompter Cable Television Monday evenings at 8 PM on Channel 10.
This project is supported by a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts. For further information contact Leandra Strobing, 212 254-4978.
