on Qube in order to determine the extent of viewer receptivity. Dr. Vivian M. Horner, vice president, if educational and children's programing at Warner Cable, wrote to Strobing echoing my suggestion: "Qube offers a special benefit, and that is that audience data can be gathered simply and easily, either as a count of viewing households or in the form of responses to specific question you pose on the screen. It puts you in touch with your audience ini an unprecedented way."

Iris Dugow, director of special programming for HBO, also wrote to Strobing: "Home Box Office enthusiastically supports, in concepts, the development and subsequent availability of quality arts programming for the national cable audience. Out own subscribers number over one million in 45 states, served through over 500 affiliates. Our experience in the cable field is that there is a paucity of quality arts programming, and, therefore a built-in market for exactly the kind of programming Soho Television is committed to produce."

The original outline Leandra Strobing followed in her research was conceived by John Trayna, Arnie Klein and Shridhar Bapat, all specialist in video technology. After surveying the creative potential and output of Soho's population at the suggestion of these experts, Strobing wrote that "it is a travesty that Soho's wealth has so far been limited to the small audience that frequent the area galleries and performance/exhibition spaces." Should one ask naively why audiences are so small in Soho while the Metropolitan Museum of Arts uptown is readying logistics to handle the phenomenally large crowds awaiting its treasure of Tutankhamun exhibit? Strobing answers: "Avant-garde is synonymous with artistic experimentation… its subject matter does not cater to mass taste and it's proponents usually constitute to a small group with low visibility."

Avant-gardist have always been frustrated when denied a forum, and today's video artists are no exception. They hope for, work for, and sometimes demand access to the electronic medium in order to reach a wider audience. I doubt, however, that mere access to home screen automatically ensures communication. We all have the privilege of not tuning in. And without communication, the avant-gardist's message becomes nearly a futile cry in the wilderness-causing only added frustration.
