Guggenheim grant narrative account

I was born in Buenos Aires, Argentina. I studied fine arts in my native country and in Uruguay. In the late sixties I moved to New York, where I continued my studies at the School of Visual Arts. In the early seventies I was involved with EAT (Experiments in Art and Technology) and participated in several group shows. I exhibited my first video installation at the Akron Art Institute in 1972. The next year, I participated in the Whitney Biennial of American Art. In 1974 my videos were shown at the "Open Circuit" show at The Museum of Modern Art New York. In 1975 I received my first CAPS grant in video from NYSCA. That same year I presented my videos at the "New American Filmmakers Series" at The Whitney Museum of American Art. In 1976 I showed, among other places, at Anthology Film Archives in New York; The Museum of Modern Art, Buenos Aires, Argentina; and The Kitchen, New York. In 1978 I received my first NEA grant for video, and I started The Live! Show, a weekly television show on Manhattan Cable Channel 10.This show aired every Monday at 11PM and lasted until 1983. Also in 1978 I participated in the First Encounter of Video at the Center in Barcelona, Spain.  In 1979 I was Artist in Residence at the University of Iowa in Iowa City; Maastrich University, Holland; and The American Center in Barcelona, Spain.

In 1981 I produced new video works at The Long Beach Museum of Art in California, and I exhibited at the New Museum, New York; Museum of Fine Arts, Denmark; and the Chicago Editing Center in Chicago, Illinois. In 1982 I received my second CAPS fellowship in video from NYSCA. That year I showed at The American Center in Paris. The next year I participated in the Sao Paolo Bienal. In 1984 I received my second NEA fellowship in video, and I showed at 1era Biennial Havana Cuba and The Gallery of Contemporary Art, Cleveland, Ohio. In 1986 I showed at Exit Art, New York, and The Queens Museum, New York. In 1988 I had a one man show at Diane Brown Gallery, New York. 

In 1990 The American Museum of the Moving Image in Queens, New York featured a retrospective of my television work. I received my 3rd NEA fellowship that year. In 1991 I had a one man show at Exit Art, New York. In 1992 I had a one man show at Foundation Patricios in Buenos Aires, Argentina. In 1995 I participated in the show 'Reaffirming Spirituality" at The Museo del Barrio, New York. In 1998 I showed at the "Sala Perspectivas" of the Museo de Arte Moderno, Buenos Aires, Argentina. In 1999 I premiered my "video painting project" at Lehman College Art Gallery, New York.

In 2000 I was awarded an Artist in Residence at the World Trade Center, under the auspices of the Lower Manhattan Cultural Council. In 2004 I participated in the show "Imaging the River" at the Hudson River Museum, New York. In 2005 the Fales Collection of New York University purchased my archives, consisting of videotapes, photos, and documents. Under the name "The Davidovich Collection," the works will soon be available for viewing to scholars, students and the general public.
