Proposal For Installation
VISUAL STUDIES WORKSHOP
ROCHESTER, NEW YORK

The Concept

This installation is intended to give material form to the many complex issues surround "artists television" (that is, regularly scheduled programs on public access channels which are produced by artists and are created specifically for a television outlet). The literal core of the installation will be a spotlite monitor which will continuously run a half hour videotape with selections from my own television program, The Live! Show. All the remaining components of the installation, including the site itself, refer back to many of the still unresolved questions regarding the definition and place of artists' television. For example, the work explores the effect of the physical context upon a work's conceptual framework and evaluation (i.e., of the museum space, the custom-designed display cases, and the theatrical, spectacular lightning on artifacts of popular culture). This reverses the prevalent tendency of placing high art in the fort of "quality programming" (Live from Lincoln Center, Dance in America) on home television.
