BASEBOARD

color videotape, 15 minutes, silent, 1975

In "Baseboard" the character and dimensions of an unknown space are slowly revealed as the camera steadily and silently scans the space. The view seen is a closeup of a wall meeting the floor. The camera passes different objects exposing them only in part. The result is a linear collage of color and texture. A tension develops as the camera relentlessly carries the viewer around the room never showing enough of the space and never slowing or stopping to allow an investigation of a particular element. When the piece concludes the tension is released as the scale and character of the space becomes apparent.
