SURVEILLANCE

color videotape, 32 minutes, silent, produced at IMAC (Intermedia Arts Center), editing facilities provided by Electronic Arts Intermix, 1976.

The t.v. screen is split vertically. On the right side the camera pans an interior space and on the left a man's face slowly turns around repeating the movement of the camera. Occasionally the images merge and the man appears to be the camera itself. A tension is created by the relentless movement of the camera which never slows or stops to allow for a careful inspection of the space. This tension is mirrored in the face of the man who shows human signs of fatigue and despair as he continuously circles and surveys. There is a powerful relationship between the color of the two images. The strong values on the left contrast with the full, rich hues of blue, violet, red on the right.
