LA MOVIDA. CON SAFO

PAST HISTORY 

This being the first issue of La Movida almost demands historical reminiscing. In late 1970 a splinter group of the now defunct Pintores de Atzlan approached Mel Casas to help organize a group of Chicano artists. The complaints about the former organization revolved around caciquismo , lack of dedication to the movimiento and no definition of times and purposes. After some hesitation, Mel Casas met with the splinter group and agreed to help restructure it on a Chicano aesthetic basis. Several more meeting the group accepted the name Con Safo suggested by Casa.

BROWN PAPER REPORT 

By Dec. 19, 1971 Casas put together the Brown Paper Report" - The essence of which has been used as a guide for the C/S group. A sample of the protean statement to C/S candidate is included (C). Since then C/S has gone through its own evolution and internal revolution.  (D) 

PRESENT HISTORY

On June 14, 1973, through the legal guidance of Attorney Gilbert Gonzales, C/S was officially incorporated as a non-profit organization. The newly re-elected C/S President, Rudy Trevino has been very active in acquiring for C/S a home base and his efforts have been rewarded.

C/S HOME SITE  

The city of San Antonio, as of September 19, 1975, has agreed to rent to C/S, on a three year basis, the Brougham studio (Old Mill) at Breckenridge Park. The City will be making initial repairs and restorations on the structure. C/S will then have most of its meetings, workshops and lectures on site.
