Dear Mel,

Now let me tell you about the symposium. I am enclosing the series of questions that the panelists are going to address so you will have an idea of the scope of what we are trying to cover on the night of April 14.

Tomas Ybarra will be the moderator, he will do a presentation for 10 minutes which will include some historical background. Each of the three panelists will have 12 minutes to develope their topic. Besides yourself, the other panelists that night are, Judith Baca and Carla Stellweg. At the end of the statements the panelists can comment on each others presentations and Tomas will make the closing remarks. After this we will take questions from the public for 45 minutes.

We will finish at 8 or 8:30p.m. and proceed to our second floor gallery to officially open Visual Artists, the first component of "Chicano Expressions." The list of questions follows:

1. Relationship between popular art and fine art from the perspective of the Chicano artist.

2. What are the specific characteristics of Chicano art, both form and content.

3. Connection to and differentiation from mainstream and international art.

4. Status of Chicano art at present. Future prognosis. Specific relations to cultural diversities, in particular blacks, orientals and the women's art movement.

5. The role of politics in the evolution of Chicano art, both in the past and the present. Has the type of influence varied in the impact and focus.

6. Where are the artists coming from, are they self taught or from art schools. Are there generational characteristics that distinguish the first from the second.

7. The relationship between Chicano artists and the artists of the diverse Latino populations in the U.S. Also the relationship with Mexican artists.
