lends itself so well to modern magazine coverage. And it is our utmost hope to produce a publication that is not only interesting to the consumer, but meaningful to the corporation executives, the decision makers and leaders of San Antonio and the country who'll be receiving this publication.

It will not be shinplaster. It will not be a chronicle of the day-to-day Chamber of Commerce operations. Instead, it will probe into the important business and social developments of a booming San Antonio, taking you behind the scenes to bring the story of the city to you.

We welcome you.

The American public, as we all know, likes to join clubs, attend parties, watch television, and have an unshakeable faith in prescriptions and vitamin pills. Most believe a vitamin prescription or vitamin pill, in fact, is the answer to their health problems.

But, one Sir Hans A. Krebs, the former Nobel winner and recent visitor to San Antonio, says Americans are all wrong.

"Americans are overprescribed and overdosed when it comes to vitamins," declared the German-born physician, now a British citizen and one of the world's leading researchers in the field of biochemistry. "There's no need for vitamin pills if one eats a balanced meal."

It's elementary, deah Watson. The vitamins that one needs are already in the balanced meals.

Sir Krebs, who's been serving as a visiting professor at the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston for

the past six months, had stopped off enroute back to England to renew acquaintances with his longtime friend, Dr. Fredrick W. Steinberg, a prominent
Alamo City practitioner. It was their first meeting since 1933 when the Nazi movement forced the to flee Germany.
It was during the ensuring war years that Sir Krebs announced the discovery
of the citric acid cycle... the chemical reactions involved in the conversions of footstuffs (carbohydrates, fats and proteins)
into metabolic energy. For this and other contributions to the world of medical science, Sir Krebs was awarded the 1953 Nobel Prize in medicine and physiology. He was knighted five years
later and is now professor of biochemistry at Oxford University. His present
work, one involving a study of the mechanism
by which the metabolic processes of the body are regulated, bears witness to the fact that vitamins aren't
necessarily a person's best friend.

"We know that the metabolic processes are kept under control, much as a refrigerator is kept constant regardless of environment. But, we want to find out how this occurs. Once man
discovers how the metabolic system works, it may be possible to prevent
certain abnormalities from occurring. But, please understand that I'm a fundamentalist. My research in this field is not aimed at solving any particular
medical problem."

Sir Krebs did admit, however, that fruitful research might provide clues relative to diseases of the liver and
other vital organs, hormonal disorders and congenital defects in infants.

Though it may be years before his current research yields results, one cannot forget Sit Krebs' earlier contributions to the society of free man. Studies
by the scientist on vitamin deficiencies during World War II uncovered ways and means by which the English people were able to keep healthy despite a severely restricted diet brought on by
rationing. His research showed that people can survive on a limited diet provided that diet is balanced. And the British Government, guided by this
knowledge, was able to determine what foods should be rationed to their people
during those trying years.

Thus, the research led to the development of a wartime national staple - a
loaf of bread chockful of proteins, roughage and minerals.

"As for myself," says Sir Krebs, one of the world's foremost authorities on vitamins. "I practice what I preach, so to speak. I try to eat balanced meals every day. I hate to take pills."
