Contemporary Art Month: A three-ring circus of artistry
By Marcia Goren Weser
Art critic
It's big, brash, brassy and bodacious - as varied as a three-ring big top, complete with sideshows and penny arcades, of sorts. Contemporary Art Month is here again, with 36 events, including exhibitions, performances, workshops, films and discussions listed on its official calendar.
The month of July traditionally marks the beginning of San Antonio's annual celebration of local art and artists, and this year's sixth version promises to be even more exciting than ever before. Artists who have been producing work for decades will be exhibiting along with artists who have never shown their work before the public.
Three universities, seven major museums and cultural centers, numerous private art galleries and the public library have planned events for the month. Viewers have the opportunity to literally immerse themselves in some of the most sublime - and mundane - contemporary work in San Antonio. Who could ask for anything more?
The Southwest Craft Center got a jump on things with Friday's opening of Linda Suggs' installation, "Innocent," at the Southwest Craft Center.

day are "Abstracted Forms from Nature," featuring works by Marilynn Branham at the Greenhouse Gallery of Fine Art (reception 5 to 8); "Contemporary Moods," with works by Jan Tips, Gene Elder, Kline & Kline, Anita Valencia and Phil Evett, at Sol del Rio Gallery (reception 5 to 8); and "Amy Freeman Lee: A Texas Collector," featuring works by international and Texas artists, at the McNay Art Museum (reception 2 to 5).
The lion's share of exhibits, however, open in July, with July 12 being a red-letter day: no less than 10 events are planned for that Friday.
Some exhibits spill over into August, with a roundtable discussion and public forum on "Contemporary Art Month: A Redefinition," exploring the implications and directions of the month, planned for Aug. 2 at the Blue Star Art Space.
Just a few highlights:
The UTSA Art Gallery bring "Tejanos: 15 Painters and 3 Sculptors" to town for the first time on Tuesday. Originally organized by Jansen-Perez Gallery to showcase Hispanic artists from Texas, the show was seen in Mexico, and now returns home. It includes works by Diana Cardenas, Jesse
