People confined to chairs may have lost the use of their legs but not their sense of rhythm

ASTONISH/continued

encouragement of others. Once this period was over, passion for their work - especially where it involved the creative process in some way - was the most important link to participating fully in life again.

I know this was true for Corrie van Hugten, who lost the use of her legs 12 years ago because of a debilitating illness. Previously, Corrie has been a ballet dancer. Even when she learned that she'd never walk again, she was determined to continue dancing. She felt that rhythm is the essential element of dance and that people confined to chairs may have lost the use of their legs but not their sense of rhythm. With her partner, Odine, she has introduced ballroom dancing, wheelchair style, throughout the Netherlands. There are now 75 official wheelchair dancing groups and 300 qualified instructors in the Netherlands, thanks to Corrie's efforts. Last year, Very Special Arts brought Corrie to the Cotting School in Lexington, Mass. - a school for kids with disabilities - to give them wheelchair dancing lessons. Since the students were having their senior prom the next week, it was an incredible experience and a great success.

One of the interesting things we've learned through our international program is the different attitudes and approached each country adopts toward people with disabilities and their access to the arts. Clearly, the U.S. is much more advanced than some countries, but there also are countries more progressive than we are. Wheelchair dancing in the Netherlands is just one example. There are continual opportunities to learn new approaches and innovative techniques from people in other states and countries. That's why our international festival will be a fantastic educational experience.

Not long ago, my Aunt Jean went to the Soviet Union to begin planning a teacher-exchange program in the arts and in special education between our two countries. The most amazing thing to her was that the educators and artists in the Soviet Union knew about our festival and wanted to be involved. So, even the Soviets will be sending a delegation to the International Very Special Arts Festival. Talk about glasnost!

I think it goes to show you how important and universal this movement is. On the walls of the Kennedy Center, where the festival will be held, there is a quote of President Kennedy's I am always reminded of my work with Very Special Arts. It reads: "I am certain that after the dust of centuries has passed over our cities, we, too, will be remembered not for our victories or defeats in battle or in politics, but for our contribution to the human spirit."
