see what was expected of him in this life when his kennelmates from Cibolo Creek Kennels retrieved smartly in the hunting dong demonstration. The senior pointers took their ease until showtime lolling in cages on the back of a pickup.

Lolling around the fajitas, tacos, fresh fruit and dips with chips were Judy and Dennis Cross, Beth and Cliff Douglass, Carla and Steve Hoech, Cathy and Joe Brown and Cheri and Keith Byrom. Blue-and-white checkered tablecloths, anchored with potted cactus festooned by patriotic curly ribbon, supported their filled plates. Outsize silver and navy stars trailing matching streamers swung gently overhead.

And as the sun set (thankfully) in the West, no coyotes howled. There was, however, the blissful sound of silence as the shooters stopped. And then the auction began, succeeded by the downhome music of Clifton Jansky.
