Dear Naul,

First, I would like to express my appreciation for your generous contribution, which constitutes a very strong backing to my campaign for a seat in Congress, which will be elected by the Chilean people this upcoming December 14th.

As you well know, the elections at the end of the year are of outmost importance for the democratic future of the chilean people. This which is yet another battle in the long struggle for democracy, will be, as the events since the triumph of October 5, 1988 have shown, the decisive battle in our quest to defeat Pinochet's Dictatorship, creating thereby the necessary conditions to reconstruct a truly democratic regime in this country.

In the province of Cachapoal, in the VI region, which I am seeking to re[resent in the "Cámara de Diputados", the traditionally very strong presence of the progressive and leftist forces has led the government forces to wage a strong campaign against the opposition candidates. The government and the more conservative sectors have done all that is within their economic and material means, and through the open intervention of town officials headed by the mayor, to stop the progress of the democratic candidates in order to maintain the existing authoritarian and neo-conservative model.

My candidacy, which is supported by wide sectors of the population, and which probably has the best possibilities to triumph, is the one that presents the greatest threat in this region to the attempts of those who have supported this government for the last sixteen years. For this reason an important part of the government campaign in the region, has been directed at and against the groups I represent and including at my own person.
