Proposal for a Workshop Series,
Retablos at School 33 Art Center

School 33 Art Center would like to propose a series of three-four workshops that would involve the Hispanic Community of Fells Point. The theme of the series would be the immigration of the residents to the United States.

The subject would be explored by groups of adults and children first viewing an exhibit of contemporary Retablos at School 33. Next, an artist who is familiar with the concepts and execution of Retablos would lead the group in painting their own Retablos based on individual experience. The traditional materials of paint on tin would be employed.

At the close of each workshop each painting would be professionally photographed. Finally, together with any accompanying translations or captions, the photos would be reproduced in an inexpensive book format. The book would document not only the individual efforts but portray the history of a community.

If possible, the original works would be exhibited at School 33 or another appropriate location. The painting would ultimately become the property of the artist who painted them.
