The only jewlery she wore was pearls--but she had a short strong and a long string and something that I learned early was called "a dog collar."shem./She drove around in a black Pierce Arrow, which glittered like the black first jet, which was driven by a handsome young man called Fred and later by a middle-aged blunt faced one called Ernest. There was some undecipherable scandal about Fred of which we were all dimly aware. Fred had left to drive Uncle Henry's yellow Pierce Arrow, a choice which we could all condone since Uncle Henry's Pierce was a convertible, long and low and bright asthe first July corn. But from what we could gather from the kicthen gossip, Fred had not acted in a very gentlemanly way with Uncle Henry, or, perhaps that Uncle Henry had been too familiar with Fred. We never got the story straight because both the kitchen group and the grown-ups would end the conversation abruptly when any of us appeared. We did know the secret had to do with friendliness, because one day when I [[strikethrough]] said [[/strikethrough]] feported that I"d seen Uncle Henry and Fred walking arm in arm down Broadway and laughing together nobody answered me but I heard Aema mutter "Tsk-tsk" and they all exchanged those strange, strained looks.
