If a dark building, well blended in with nature in relationship to a small intimate ravine appeals to you then, in my opinion, the men that have been doing the work along this general line and who would do the best job for you are William Wilson Wurster, 402 Jackson Street, San Fransisco 11, California. He is well known in architectural circles and extremely highly thought of. Most of Wurster's work is around the San Fransisco area. He is now dean of architecture at the university of California and is the leader of architects in California.

If, on the other hand, you see your problem thus; that the ravine is large enough so that the best results can be achieved by a contrast between architecture and nature - that the building may be light in color, etc., then I would recommend Edward E. Stone, 50 East 64th Street, New York, New York, as the man who has done some very fine residential work. He has a great understanding and love for the relationship of building and nature and would do a very fine job. Not long ago he completed the school of fine art at the University of Arkansas. You may or may not like this building, I don't know. Stone is exceptionally gifted. He would do a very fine job for you. Somewhere along the line, you may get a little bit annoyed with him because he sometimes takes to alcohol, but you would be satisfied in the end.

Which approach I would take to this problem I don't know, because I have not seen the site. I would approach this as a very special problem where the solution would grow out of the program and the aesthetic needs of the site. If I found that there was a basic contradiction between the needs of the problem and the clients wishes then I would not tackle the problem.

This is rather a curious long letter, the kind that I don't usually write, but anyway, here it is. Sometime when in California I will call you.

Sincerely,
