1. The Philadelphia City Planning Exhibition was 35,000 sq. ft. and costs for planning and production were $350,000 (presentation $150,000). 2. The Frank Lloyd Wright show was 10,000 sq. ft. and cost $35,000 with much material and time given, therefore assume $50,000 today. In other words: Philadelphia ....... $10 a sq. ft. Frank L. Wright .... $ 5 a sq. ft. We should assume that our exhibition will cost $10 a sq. ft. Assuming an exhibition of 10,000 sq. ft., we have $80,000, added to this should be cost of committee, and their travel - in other words: Giedion Corbu Gropius Sert Saarinen -Total cost of fees and travel as per first estimate ............... $ 27,000 Design & Production beyond this point ............. 100,000 $127,000 The Frank Lloyd Wright exhibition cost $12,000 to ship to and erect and promote (publicity, etc.) in Florence. The same cost $7,000 in Zurich, $7,000 in Holland and $10,000 in Mexico. Assuming a less bulky system, etc., we can assume $6,000 per exhibit. Therefore, $48,000 per year. Thus we have a new total figure arrived at independently of the first one: Design, production and consultants ..... $127,000 First year ............................. 48,000 Second year ............................ 48,000 Third year ............................. 48,000 $271,000 Contingency - 20% ...................... 54,200 Total Cost of Exhibition ............... $325,200 I am really surprised how these figures mount up. In both estimates there is almost $100,000 for the cost of the second and third year. It seems to me advisable to, at first, only consider the first year. This would reduce commitment to about $200,000. I would think that with a total of $200,000 a really excellent exhibition could be made. Am I completely off on my figures? I hope this guess can be of help to you. If there is anything else I can do at this time please let me know. Sincerely, EERO SAARINEN AND ASSOCIATES Eero Saarinen ES:vk
