BETWEEN OPPOSING FORMS...THE STRUGGLE FOR HARMONY...THE MUTUAL SUPPORT OF OPPOSING TRENDS...AND, IF HE WISHES TO, THE APPLICATION OF THIS STRUGGLE TO LIFE ITSELF. THEY PROCEED TO DAVID AND GOLIATH.
HOST
Starting about 1930, when you did the first study for this David and Goliath, you have made many sculptures specifically on Biblical themes. Was this an outgrowth of the rise of Hitler, or does the Bible have a deeper meaning for you as a source of thematic material?

MR. LIPCHITZ RESPONDS AS HE WILL. DAVID AND GOLIATH DEMANDS FULL, SLOW, VISUAL TREATMENT. A VISUAL POINT SHOULD BE MADE OF THE SWASTIKA WHICH APPEARS IN THE GOLIATH AREA OF THE SCULPTURE. PRESUMABLY, MR. LIPCHITZ WILL ALSO MAKE A VERBAL POINT OF IT EARLY IN HIS RESPONSE.

THEY PROCEED TO HAGAR, 1948
HOST
