OUTLINES OF FUNDING PROPOSALS

Annual Monetary Awards to Promising Artists and Scholars

Each year the Academy will present honorary awards to artists and scholars whose achievements are notable. The monetary awards are designed to recognize and encourage young artists and scholars who have, for example, written a novel or scholarly work which shows promise of further achievement. The Academy would present annual awards of $3,000 each in the following categories: fiction, poetry, drama, music, dance, history and biography, social science, non-fiction, film and photography, and art; there would also be an award for exceptional contribution in architecture, engineering, journalism or natural science.

Fellowship Program for Promising Artists and Scholars

The Academy is aware of the great difficulty black artists and scholars encounter in acquiring funds to continue their studies or pursue research projects. The Academy wishes to develop a large Fellowship program which would provide funds for artists and scholars engaged in projects of cultural and historical importance to black people. Ideally, the Fellowships would be based upon the financial needs of the particular project, however, an average of $8,000 each would be minimal. The Fellowships would be granted to persons in the following fields: Plastic Arts (2), Performing Arts (3), Letters (4), Other (2).

Directory of Cultural Activities in the Black Community

The Academy would like to publish a regional directory (North, South, East, and West) of cultural activities in the black communities across the country. The Directory would list and briefly describe programs in theatre, dance, art, music, writing, and film which are in operation. In addition, the directory would list individuals engaged in theses activities, who meet a criteria of at least semi-professional status in their discipline. The project would require funds for editorial assistance, research assistants, clerical staff to handle mail inquiries, postage and printing costs, and Wide Area Telephone Service.
